Mission Trip FAQS
How do I organize a trip?
First, email us at [email protected] to organize your trip. After this, a Trip Coordinator will guide you through the process.
Can I plan a trip as an individual?
Yes, once you arrive to Haiti we will pair you up with other visiting teams or with a community leader.
Do I need to bring my own food?
Not all of it. If you are staying at the mission house, breakfast and dinner will be provided for you. You will need to pack items for lunch. If you are staying at Wahoo Bay Beach Resort, then breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided for you. You will receive our suggested food list with the registration packet.
What will I do when I get there?
Your week will be comprised of community development projects and evangelical outreach. If you have a special professional license such as medical or educational, your week will be planned by our mission coordinators in Haiti. You will receive your daily itinerary when you arrive at the mission.
What is your minimum age?
Minimum age for a minor traveling with his/her guardian is 6 years old. If any minors are going on the trip, a member of at least 25 years must be accompanying to chaperone, with signed permission to take responsibility of the minors while traveling.
How big should my group be?
We can receive up to 30 people. The average group is 10-14 people.
What is included in the cost? Is airfare included?
The cost for each team member to stay at the mission house is $620 for eight days (including arrival and departure days)or $85/day. The cost includes room and board (2 meals/day), A $250 nonrefundable registration fee for each member is required upon submitting your application. The registration fee applies to the total $620 trip cost.
Airfare to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti is reasonable. The airport receives several airlines and flights daily. Airfare is not included in the trip cost. Each person on the team is responsible for airfare to Port-Au-Prince. After booking your ticket, we do ask each team member to send us a copy of the itinerary so transportation can be arranged.
We also ask each team member to pay $120 for fuel to the three communities we serve andtips for a representative to assist you inside the airport, and rental of a baggage cart. Baggage claim and immigration at the airport in Haiti can be overwhelming. The representative will assist the team through this process at the airport.
How do we get to Give Us Hope?
After arriving at the Port au Prince airport, a Give Us Hope driver will meet you outside and drive you to the Give Us Hope Mission House. It is about a 1 hour drive, north, to the mission house.
Do I need a passport and visa to travel?
All North Americans traveling to Haiti must have a passport. You will not be allowed into Haiti without one. Paperwork to enter Haiti will be completed on the airplane. So, remember to put a pen in you carry-on.
Where do we stay?
Unless you choose to stay at the resort, you and your team will stay at the mission house. The mission house is located on a private beach. It has standard electricity. The guest houses have bathrooms with showers and toilets. Internet is accessible at the mission house. Telecommunication to the U.S and other countries is also available.
Is it safe to travel to Haiti?
Give Us Hope could not guarantee your safety in any country, state, or province that you happen to visit. With Haiti being a third world country, we understand travel can pose a higher risk. However, the groups’ safety is of our utmost concern. Give Us Hope employs several security measures. We have personal security for each group, and the mission house is surrounded by a security gate with access only for mission team workers and staff. Give Us Hope is fortunate to have members of the community as directors of GUHM. They are community leaders and have access to the chief of police and other community officials.
How long can I stay?
Mission trips last 7-14 days.
Will we be working with other groups?
Yes, your group may spend part of their time working with other groups visiting the mission house.
What immunizations do I need to get?
GROUPS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING VACCINATIONS AND MEDICATIONS:
HEPATITIS A/B
TETANUS/DIPHTHERIA
TYPHOID FEVER
PREVENTATIVE MALARIA MEDICATION
What do I need to pack?
A packing list will be sent to your group in advance of your departure. The mission will provide sheets and pillows for you.
Do I need to bring money with me?
The amount of money you take will depend on your desire to buy souvenirs. You can also pay for services at the mission house: washing clothes, hair braiding. We recommend bringing $50-$100 in small bills.
What is the dress code?
Dress comfortably. A suggested packing list will be sent to you by a mission coordinator.
Should I stay at the resort?
We encourage you to stay at the mission house. However, if you stay at the resort, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided for you. Many mission projects work through lunch, therefore these meals at the resort will be skipped at times. Transportation will be provided to you in the morning from the resort and in the evening to the resort.
